Apple appears to be preparing a more refined rather than radically redesigned iPhone for 2026. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to launch in September, and the latest leaks suggest that Apple’s biggest changes could happen inside the phone. A new camera system, 2nm processor, improved modem and larger battery are among the upgrades currently being discussed.
Unlike some earlier rumours of a major redesign, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to look broadly similar to the iPhone 17 Pro. The familiar rear camera plateau is likely to remain, while the Pro Max could become slightly thicker. That extra thickness may not necessarily be bad news for users if it allows Apple to fit a larger battery.
The display sizes are also expected to remain unchanged. The iPhone 18 Pro could feature a 6.3-inch panel, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max may retain its 6.9-inch display. Apple is reportedly focusing instead on display efficiency, with LTPO+ technology tipped for the new models. This could help the phones manage refresh rates more efficiently and reduce power consumption.
Another visible change could be the Dynamic Island. Apple is reportedly working on a smaller front cutout by shifting some Face ID components beneath the screen. The aim would be to give users more usable display space without immediately eliminating the Dynamic Island altogether. However, reports are not completely consistent on whether the smaller design will make it into the final production models this year.
The camera system is shaping up as one of the most interesting iPhone 18 Pro upgrades. Apple is reportedly testing a variable-aperture main camera, which would mark a significant change for the iPhone camera system.
A variable aperture allows the camera to physically control how much light enters the lens. That can be useful when moving between bright outdoor scenes and darker environments. It can also provide more control over depth of field, potentially producing more natural background blur in portrait photography.
The technology could be particularly useful for video. Controlling the amount of incoming light can help prevent scenes from becoming overexposed in bright conditions. Apple’s image-processing software would still play an important role, but the addition of physical aperture control could give the hardware more flexibility.
The telephoto camera could also receive an aperture upgrade, potentially improving low-light photography. Some reports have gone further, suggesting that at least one Pro model could use a stacked image sensor designed to improve speed and reduce image noise.
Under the hood, the A20 Pro chip could become another headline feature. Reports indicate that Apple may use TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing technology for its next-generation processor. The move could bring better performance while using less power, an important combination for smartphones that increasingly rely on artificial intelligence and demanding applications.
The new chip could also benefit gaming, photography and video processing. More efficient processing would mean the iPhone could handle intensive workloads without drawing as much power. Apple is also reportedly exploring advanced packaging technology that could bring memory closer to the processing components.
Connectivity could get a boost from Apple’s C2 modem. The company has been gradually developing its own cellular modem technology, and the C2 is expected to offer improvements over the current generation. Reports point to better 5G performance and expanded satellite-related capabilities, although the exact features and markets remain unclear.
For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, battery life could become an important selling point. One leak suggests the battery may increase to roughly 5,200mAh, compared with an estimated 5,088mAh in the previous Pro Max. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro may receive a more modest battery increase.
The larger battery could explain why the Pro Max is reportedly becoming slightly thicker and heavier. For many users, that may be a reasonable trade-off if the phone delivers noticeably longer battery life.
Apple could also introduce a new colour palette. Dark cherry or deep red has emerged as one of the most frequently mentioned options, with light blue, dark grey and silver also reportedly being considered. The rear of the phone could receive a more uniform Ceramic Shield finish, giving the device a cleaner appearance.
