Iran offers 14-point peace plan, Trump doubtful

Proposal seeks sanctions relief, troop withdrawal; US questions chances of deal

Iran has come forward with a 14-point plan in an effort to ease tensions with the United States, offering a possible path to end the ongoing conflict. The proposal, shared through mediators, is now being reviewed in Washington, though expectations remain cautious.

The plan mainly focuses on reducing pressure on Iran’s economy. Tehran has asked for US sanctions to be lifted, which it says are hurting its trade and growth. It has also called for the withdrawal of US forces from nearby regions and the release of Iranian funds that are currently frozen abroad.

Another key part of the proposal is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil shipments. Recent tensions in the region have disrupted movement through this passage, affecting oil supply and prices worldwide. Iran says restoring normal activity there would help stabilise the situation.

The proposal also looks beyond the immediate conflict, suggesting steps to reduce tensions in the wider region. However, it does not clearly address concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme, which has been a major sticking point for the US in past talks.

US President Donald Trump has said the plan is being studied but has expressed doubts about whether it will work. He indicated that the proposal may not meet US expectations in its current form, making a quick agreement unlikely.
