Kerala CM race intensifies within Congress

Satheesan, Venugopal, Chennithala emerge as key contenders

After a strong win in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress party is now focused on choosing its next Chief Minister. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a clear majority, and the Congress itself won the highest number of seats within the alliance, putting it firmly in charge of forming the government.

With victory secured, attention has shifted to the leadership question. Three senior leaders—V.D. Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala—have emerged as the main contenders for the top post. Each has strong support within the party, making the decision more competitive.

V.D. Satheesan, who served as Leader of the Opposition, is being seen as a strong candidate. Many in the party believe his role in leading the campaign and taking on the previous government helped the Congress return to power. His supporters say he represents a fresh and energetic leadership style.

K.C. Venugopal, on the other hand, is a senior leader with strong connections to the Congress high command in Delhi. His experience at the national level and organisational skills are seen as key advantages. Some leaders feel he could ensure smooth coordination between the state and central leadership.

Ramesh Chennithala, a veteran in Kerala politics, is also in the race. He brings years of administrative experience and has held several important positions in the past. His supporters argue that his experience makes him a safe and stable choice.

Behind the scenes, discussions are ongoing within the party. Different groups are trying to gather support from newly elected MLAs, while also presenting their case to the central leadership. The final decision is expected to be taken by the Congress high command after consultations with state leaders.

Allies in the UDF are also watching closely, although the Chief Minister’s post will go to the Congress. Party leaders have said they will accept the final decision to avoid internal conflict.
