Meta charges for smart glasses AI

Move reflects Meta's growing focus on AI subscription revenue

Meta has begun charging users for some of the advanced artificial intelligence features available on its smart glasses, marking a significant shift in the company’s wearable technology strategy.

The new subscription requirement affects select AI-powered capabilities that run directly on the device instead of relying on cloud processing. These on-device features are designed to respond faster, improve privacy and continue working even when internet connectivity is limited.

Until recently, many users could access these features without paying extra. However, Meta has now moved them behind its paid AI subscription, meaning customers will need to pay a monthly fee to continue using some of the glasses’ most advanced capabilities.

The change has sparked disappointment among early adopters, many of whom expected the features to remain free after purchasing the device. Some users have questioned whether hardware buyers should have to pay an additional subscription to unlock functions that were previously available.

Meta argues that developing and maintaining advanced AI services requires significant investment. The company says subscription revenue will help support continuous software improvements, new AI tools and future updates for its wearable devices.

The move reflects a growing trend in the technology industry, where companies are pairing hardware sales with recurring subscription services. Rather than relying only on device sales, firms are increasingly generating revenue through premium software features and AI-powered tools.
