Microsoft is rolling out a Windows 11 update that will let users change the function of the dedicated Copilot key on newer laptops. The move comes after feedback that the fixed AI shortcut disrupted regular keyboard use for some users.
The Copilot key, introduced in 2024, was designed to launch Microsoft’s AI assistant instantly. While it supports the company’s push toward AI-powered computing, many users found it replaced keys they regularly used for shortcuts and productivity tasks.
With the update, users will be able to remap the Copilot key through Windows Settings. It can be set to act as the Right Ctrl key or the Context Menu key, restoring traditional keyboard functionality.
Microsoft said the change is aimed at improving flexibility and addressing user concerns, especially from those who rely heavily on keyboard shortcuts in daily work. The option will be built directly into Windows Settings, removing the need for third-party tools.
The update is expected to roll out later this year as part of Windows 11 improvements focused on balancing AI features with usability.
