Migrant crackdown near Bengal-Bangladesh border

Suspected illegal migrants head towards Bengal border crackdown

As West Bengal intensifies its action against suspected illegal migrants, several people have reportedly moved towards the India-Bangladesh border, with many trying to return to Bangladesh through border areas in North 24 Parganas district.

According to reports, groups of people reached areas near the Hakimpur border after authorities intensified checks and verification drives linked to illegal immigration. Many of them were reportedly staying in temporary holding centres set up during the ongoing operation.

Officials said security agencies have increased monitoring along the border to prevent illegal crossings and maintain law and order. Border personnel are also coordinating with local authorities as movement near sensitive border points has increased in recent days.

The crackdown comes amid growing political focus on illegal immigration in West Bengal. Authorities have reportedly been verifying identity documents and checking the citizenship status of suspected undocumented migrants in several districts.

Some individuals claimed they wanted to return to Bangladesh voluntarily after facing uncertainty during the verification process. However, officials have not confirmed the exact number of people attempting to cross the border.

The issue has triggered political reactions in the state, with opposition parties accusing the government of mishandling the situation, while authorities defended the verification drive as necessary for national security and legal compliance.

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have also intensified surveillance in vulnerable areas to prevent unauthorised movement across the international border. Security checks have reportedly been strengthened at multiple entry and exit points.

Human rights groups and local organisations have meanwhile expressed concern over the condition of people staying in holding centres and urged authorities to ensure proper treatment and legal support.

Officials clarified that all actions are being taken according to legal procedures and security protocols. The situation continues to remain sensitive as authorities monitor border areas closely.
