Monsoon touches South Konkan

Maharashtra advises farmers to delay sowing as rainfall remains uneven

The southwest monsoon has advanced into South Konkan, bringing rainfall to several parts of Maharashtra and raising expectations of an early spell of showers in Mumbai and neighbouring regions. However, the state government has advised farmers to postpone sowing activities until rainfall becomes more widespread and consistent.

According to weather officials, the monsoon’s progress has improved over the past few days, aided by favourable atmospheric conditions. Rainfall activity has increased across parts of the Konkan coast, while forecasts indicate that Mumbai could receive showers earlier than expected due to the influence of a western disturbance interacting with monsoon systems.

Meteorologists said the western disturbance may enhance moisture inflow and cloud formation over Maharashtra, increasing the likelihood of rainfall in Mumbai, Thane and surrounding districts. The development is expected to provide relief from prevailing heat and humidity conditions in the region.

Despite the monsoon’s arrival in South Konkan, agricultural authorities have urged caution among farmers. The Maharashtra agriculture department has advised cultivators not to begin large-scale sowing immediately, as rainfall distribution remains uneven across many districts. Officials warned that premature sowing could expose crops to moisture stress if rain activity weakens after the initial spell.

Farmers have been asked to wait until sufficient and sustained rainfall is recorded before planting major kharif crops. Agriculture experts noted that a stable monsoon pattern is essential for proper seed germination and healthy crop growth during the early stages of the season.

The progress of the monsoon is being closely monitored, particularly in key agricultural regions where farmers are preparing for the kharif sowing season. Adequate rainfall over the next few weeks will be critical for crops such as paddy, soybean, cotton and pulses.

Weather agencies expect rainfall activity to gradually expand across more parts of Maharashtra as the monsoon advances further inland. While forecasts remain favourable, authorities said local variations in rainfall intensity are likely and advised farmers to follow official weather updates before making sowing decisions.
