Relentless monsoon showers continued to batter Mumbai on Sunday, causing widespread waterlogging, disrupting transport services and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to maintain a red alert for the city and surrounding districts.
The heavy rain turned tragic in Mankhurd, where a chawl collapsed, killing six people and injuring one. The incident occurred amid incessant rainfall, with rescue teams from the fire brigade, police and disaster response forces rushing to the site to clear debris and search for survivors. The injured person was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, while authorities launched an investigation into the collapse.
Across Mumbai, continuous rainfall inundated several low-lying areas, slowing road traffic and disrupting suburban train services. Waterlogging was reported from multiple parts of the city, forcing commuters to navigate flooded roads and causing delays during peak hours.
Civic authorities have deployed emergency teams across vulnerable locations to monitor flood-prone areas, clear blocked drains and respond to rain-related incidents. Residents living in dilapidated buildings have been urged to remain cautious and shift to safer places if advised by officials.
The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, warning of possible flooding, landslides and damage to weak structures. Fishermen have also been advised against venturing into the Arabian Sea due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.
Officials have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during intense rain spells and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities. Emergency response teams remain on high alert as the city braces for more rain in the coming days.
