Mumbai schools closed due to rain fury

BMC closes schools while colleges decide independently amid relentless rain and flooding today

Heavy rain continued to lash Mumbai on Tuesday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to declare a holiday for all schools as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of intense rainfall across the city and neighbouring districts.

The school holiday applies to all BMC-run, government-aided and private schools, with authorities prioritising the safety of students amid the worsening weather. However, there is no citywide order for colleges to remain closed. Higher educational institutions have been allowed to take their own call based on local conditions, with some opting for online classes or suspending lectures.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby regions, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Several parts of the city recorded intense showers overnight, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion and slower movement on key roads during the morning rush.

Despite the rain, suburban and Metro rail services continued to operate, though some commuters reported delays due to reduced visibility and water accumulation near stations. BEST buses also remained on the roads, but authorities advised residents to expect longer travel times.

Civic teams were deployed across flood-prone areas to clear blocked drains, monitor water levels and respond to emergency calls. Disaster management officials urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded roads and follow weather advisories issued by the IMD and BMC.

Government and private offices largely remained open, with officials saying services would continue unless weather conditions deteriorated further. Emergency services, including hospitals, fire personnel and rescue teams, have been placed on high alert.

Residents in low-lying neighbourhoods were advised to remain vigilant as intermittent heavy showers are expected to continue through the day. Authorities also warned of possible tree falls, localised flooding and disruptions to road traffic if rainfall intensifies.

With the monsoon remaining active over Maharashtra, officials said public safety remains the top priority. Citizens have been urged to cooperate with civic agencies, avoid venturing into waterlogged areas and keep track of official weather updates before stepping out.
