Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung has resigned after facing growing scrutiny over his financial dealings and alleged links to a businessman under investigation. His resignation is another setback for Nepal’s newly formed government.
Gurung announced his decision publicly, saying trust and accountability are more important than remaining in office. He said stepping down would allow any concerns related to him to be examined fairly and without affecting the investigation process.
The controversy focused on Gurung’s reported investments and alleged business ties with Deepak Bhatta, who is facing a money-laundering probe. Opposition leaders and critics had demanded more clarity about the minister’s finances and his relationship with the businessman.
Gurung had joined the cabinet less than a month ago as part of the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. His exit makes him the second minister to resign since the administration took office, raising pressure on the new leadership.
Prime Minister Shah is expected to temporarily handle the Home Ministry until a new minister is appointed. The ministry is one of the most important in Nepal, overseeing internal security, police, immigration and disaster response.
The resignation has created fresh political challenges for the government, which came to power promising reform, transparency and clean governance. Many people are now watching closely to see how quickly the administration responds and whether it can maintain public confidence.
