Petrol, diesel prices hiked by ₹3, CNG by ₹2

Consumers face higher transport and fuel costs after latest nationwide rate revision

Petrol, diesel and CNG prices were increased across India on Friday as rising global crude oil prices and escalating tensions involving Iran pushed energy costs higher. The hike comes amid fears of disruption in international oil supply routes and growing pressure on domestic fuel retailers. Petrol and diesel prices were increased by nearly ₹3 per litre in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. In Delhi, petrol prices crossed ₹108 per litre while diesel moved above ₹97 per litre after oil marketing companies revised retail fuel rates.

CNG prices were also increased by ₹2 per kilogram in several cities due to rising input costs and pressure on the energy sector. The hike is expected to affect public transport services, auto-rickshaw operations and commercial vehicle expenses in urban areas.

Officials said the revision was linked to the sharp rise in international crude oil prices following escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Global energy markets reacted strongly amid concerns that the conflict involving Iran could affect crude exports and disrupt shipping movement through key trade routes.

India imports a major share of its crude oil requirements, making domestic fuel prices sensitive to fluctuations in global energy markets. Industry experts said the latest increase could lead to higher transportation costs and eventually impact prices of essential goods and services.

Government officials stated that oil companies were facing increased financial pressure because of rising import bills and volatile international prices. The revision, they said, was necessary to offset losses faced by fuel retailers.

The hike triggered criticism from opposition parties, which accused the Centre of failing to provide relief to consumers already struggling with inflation and rising household expenses. Several opposition leaders demanded a reduction in fuel taxes to control retail prices.

Transport operators and logistics companies also expressed concern, warning that higher fuel and CNG prices could increase freight charges and public transport fares in the coming weeks.
