Bihar witnessed a major political transition on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the state. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Patna amid tight security and the presence of senior leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Choudhary replaces outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who stepped down after serving as Bihar’s longest-serving chief minister. His resignation paved the way for a new coalition-led government headed by the BJP for the first time in the state’s history.
The transition follows Choudhary’s unanimous election as the leader of the NDA legislature party. He subsequently met the Governor to formally stake claim to form the government, backed by a clear majority in the state assembly.
Along with Choudhary, senior leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were also sworn in as deputy chief ministers, reflecting the power-sharing arrangement within the alliance. The formation of the new cabinet is expected to continue in the coming days with allocation of portfolios.
The swearing-in marks a significant shift in Bihar’s political landscape, ending nearly two decades of continuous leadership under Nitish Kumar and ushering in direct BJP leadership in the state. Party leaders described the development as the beginning of a new administrative phase focused on governance, development, and policy execution.
Senior leaders from across the NDA attended the ceremony, which was seen as a demonstration of alliance unity and a consolidation of political power in the state.
