The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is facing a fresh political challenge after several of its Lok Sabha MPs reportedly moved closer to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, triggering fears of another major split in Maharashtra politics.
Reports suggest that six of the party’s nine MPs have explored the possibility of forming a separate group in Parliament and aligning with the Shinde camp. The move, if completed, would mark another setback for Uddhav Thackeray, whose party has been battling organisational and electoral challenges since the original Shiv Sena split in 2022.
The developments have sparked intense political activity in both Mumbai and New Delhi. Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have sought to rally support among their MPs and prevent defections, while the Shinde faction appears keen to strengthen its position in Parliament and Maharashtra politics.
Party leaders from the UBT camp have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging that no breakaway group be recognised without following due process. The party has also warned rebel MPs of disciplinary action if they violate the party whip or abandon the organisation under whose banner they were elected.
The rebellion has exposed growing unease within the UBT faction. Political observers believe some leaders are concerned about the party’s future prospects and may see greater political opportunities in aligning with the ruling Mahayuti alliance led by the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and its allies.
At the same time, uncertainty remains over the exact numbers supporting the move. While reports initially suggested six MPs were ready to break away, some lawmakers have publicly denied switching sides or indicated that they are yet to make a final decision.
