Starmer announces £300 bn defence boost

Investment targets drone warfare, military modernisation and stronger national security

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a £300 billion defence investment plan, describing it as the biggest overhaul of the United Kingdom’s military capabilities in decades. The long-term strategy aims to strengthen national security, modernise the armed forces and prepare the country for future security challenges.

A major focus of the plan is the expansion of drone warfare capabilities, reflecting the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern conflicts. The government intends to invest heavily in advanced drone technology, artificial intelligence and surveillance systems to improve the UK’s defence preparedness.

The package also includes funding to upgrade military equipment, strengthen cyber defence, improve missile systems and modernise naval, air and land forces. Officials said the investment would ensure the armed forces remain equipped to respond to evolving global threats.

Starmer said recent conflicts around the world have highlighted the need for countries to adapt quickly to changing forms of warfare. He stressed that the UK must be ready to defend its interests while supporting international security and fulfilling its commitments to allies.

The defence strategy is expected to create thousands of jobs across the country’s defence manufacturing and technology sectors. The government believes increased investment will boost innovation, strengthen domestic production and support economic growth alongside military modernisation.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, with governments across Europe increasing defence spending in response to changing security conditions. Britain has also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with NATO partners to enhance regional and global stability.

While supporters welcomed the investment as necessary to strengthen national security, critics questioned the scale of spending and urged the government to ensure adequate funding for healthcare, education and other public services alongside defence.
