A statue of Syama Prasad Mukherjee was allegedly vandalised in Kolkata, triggering a political row just days before the scheduled visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the city. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, remains a prominent political figure whose legacy continues to hold significance in Indian politics.
According to police, unidentified persons damaged the marble tiles surrounding the statue and also broke the nameplate installed at the memorial. The incident came to light after local residents noticed the damage and informed the authorities. Police teams reached the spot soon after and launched an investigation to identify those responsible.
The vandalism has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the ruling government in West Bengal of failing to protect important public memorials. Party leaders demanded strict action against those involved and called for enhanced security at statues of national leaders.
The incident has gained significance as BJP leaders alleged that the act was intended to provoke tensions ahead of Amit Shah’s visit, while urging authorities to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
Authorities have assured that the damaged portions of the memorial will be repaired at the earliest. Meanwhile, the incident has once again highlighted concerns over the protection of public monuments and the need for stricter surveillance at historically and politically significant sites.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet identified the individuals responsible for the vandalism.
