Tamil Nadu has rolled out its ambitious ₹12,642-crore VB-G Ram-G rural employment scheme, with the programme coming into effect from July 1. The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities in villages while creating durable public assets and improving basic infrastructure across the State.
The State government has issued detailed operational guidelines to ensure smooth implementation of the scheme. Local bodies and district administrations have been instructed to identify eligible works, monitor execution and ensure that employment reaches those who need it the most.
The programme focuses on creating wage employment in rural areas through projects such as improving village roads, strengthening water conservation structures, restoring ponds, desilting canals, enhancing irrigation facilities and developing other community assets. Officials believe these works will not only provide livelihoods but also improve the quality of life in rural communities.
The government has said the scheme is designed to complement existing rural development programmes while addressing local needs more effectively. Priority will be given to projects that enhance agricultural productivity, conserve natural resources and strengthen village infrastructure.
District collectors and local authorities have been asked to ensure transparency in the selection of works and timely payment of wages. Monitoring mechanisms have also been put in place to track progress and prevent delays in execution.
The launch comes at a time when rural employment continues to be a key focus area, particularly for families dependent on seasonal agricultural work. By creating job opportunities closer to home, the government hopes to reduce financial hardship and support rural households during periods of limited farm activity.
