The Uttar Pradesh government has announced an increase in minimum wages across different worker categories following recent protests in Noida. The move is seen as an effort to address worker concerns and bring the situation under control after days of unrest.
The protests, led by factory workers in Noida’s industrial areas, were driven by demands for better wages and improved working conditions. In some places, the demonstrations turned violent, disrupting traffic and daily life. The situation prompted the government to step in and review wage structures.
Under the revised rates, unskilled workers in districts like Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad will now earn around ₹13,690 per month. Semi-skilled workers will receive about ₹15,059, while skilled workers will get close to ₹16,868 per month. Similar increases have been introduced in other parts of the state, with slightly lower rates depending on the region.
Officials said the new wages have been implemented from April 1 and were finalised after discussions with labour representatives and industry stakeholders. The aim is to offer better pay while maintaining balance for businesses operating in the state.
One of the key reasons behind the protests was the demand for wage parity with neighbouring states, especially Haryana, where workers recently saw higher pay revisions. Many workers in Noida felt they were being left behind, which added to their frustration.
While the wage hike is a step towards addressing these concerns, some workers say issues like job security, benefits, and working conditions also need attention. Small protests have continued in certain areas, though the intensity has reduced.
