Update WhatsApp now to fix security flaws

New bugs could let harmful files enter devices, Meta warns

WhatsApp users are being asked to update their app immediately after security flaws were found that could allow harmful files to reach their devices. Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, has released fixes and says installing the latest version is important for safety.

The issue is linked to how WhatsApp handles files and attachments. In some cases, attackers could hide dangerous files by making them look like normal documents or media. This means a file may appear safe but could act differently when opened, putting the device at risk.

Another problem involves how links and previews are handled inside the app. Hackers could misuse this to send misleading links or files that may lead users to unsafe content. However, experts say these flaws do not automatically harm devices. Users usually need to open the file or click on the link for any damage to happen.

Meta has said there is no clear evidence yet that these flaws have been widely used in real attacks. Still, the company has taken the step of fixing the issues quickly and advising users to update without delay.

Cybersecurity experts say messaging apps are common targets because people trust messages from known contacts. This makes it easier for attackers to trick users into opening harmful files.

Users are advised to download updates from official app stores and avoid opening files or links from unknown or suspicious sources. Keeping apps updated is one of the simplest ways to stay protected.
