US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has come under criticism after quoting lines linked to the film Pulp Fiction during a prayer event, with many believing he was citing a verse from the Bible.
The controversy began after Hegseth used words commonly associated with the movie’s famous monologue, often mistaken for a passage from Ezekiel 25:17. However, the dialogue used in the film is not an exact Bible verse and was largely created for cinematic effect.
Soon after the event, social media users and critics pointed out the mistake, questioning how a senior official could use a fictional quote in a formal religious setting. The incident quickly sparked debate online.
The Pentagon later clarified that the remarks were part of a symbolic reference tied to military tradition and not meant to be presented as a direct reading from scripture.
Still, the episode has raised wider questions about mixing religion, politics, and pop culture at official government events. Critics said the use of a movie quote during a prayer gathering was inappropriate, while supporters argued it was meant as a cultural reference rather than a serious biblical citation.
The real verse from the Book of Ezekiel differs significantly from the version made famous by Pulp Fiction. Over the years, many people have mistakenly believed the movie lines came directly from the Bible.
