US jobs for Americans, President JD Vance says

US intensifies scrutiny, saying American jobs must remain protected from visa misuse always

US Vice President JD Vance has issued a strong warning against the misuse of the H-1B visa programme, saying the administration will not tolerate fraud and that American jobs should go to eligible workers rather than those who abuse the system.

His remarks came as the US government launched a fresh investigation into alleged H-1B visa fraud, signalling tighter scrutiny of employers and applicants under the skilled worker programme. The probe is expected to examine cases involving fake documentation, misrepresentation and other violations linked to visa applications.

Speaking on the issue, Vance said the H-1B programme was created to address genuine skill shortages and should not be exploited to bypass immigration rules or unfairly displace American workers. “US jobs are for Americans, not foreign fraudsters,” he said, stressing that the administration would take strict action against anyone found misusing the system.

The H-1B visa allows US employers to hire foreign professionals in specialised fields such as information technology, engineering, healthcare and finance. Indian professionals account for the largest share of H-1B visa holders, making any policy changes or enforcement measures closely watched in India.

US authorities said the latest investigation is aimed at identifying fraudulent practices while protecting the integrity of the immigration system. Officials clarified that the focus is on misuse of the programme rather than legitimate applicants or employers who comply with immigration laws.

The announcement comes amid the Trump administration’s broader push to tighten immigration enforcement and strengthen oversight of employment-based visa programmes. The administration has repeatedly argued that visa rules should prioritise American workers while ensuring that businesses continue to access highly skilled talent when genuine shortages exist.
