Venezuela earthquake death toll nears 2,000

Rescue operations continue as authorities struggle amid widespread destruction and displacement nationwide

The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Venezuela has climbed to nearly 2,000, as rescue teams continue recovery operations in heavily damaged regions and hopes of finding survivors fade with each passing day.

Authorities have confirmed that 1,943 people have died, with thousands more injured and many still missing following the powerful quake that struck earlier this week. Entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble, leaving families searching desperately for loved ones amid the debris.

Emergency services, supported by military units and international aid groups, are working around the clock to clear collapsed buildings and reach remote areas cut off by damaged roads and infrastructure. However, officials admit that the chances of finding survivors trapped under the rubble are now extremely low.

The government has extended the state of emergency, deploying additional resources to manage rescue efforts, provide medical assistance and distribute food, water and temporary shelter to displaced residents. Makeshift camps have been set up in several regions as thousands have been left homeless.

Hospitals in affected areas are overwhelmed, with medical teams treating a steady stream of injured survivors, many of whom are in critical condition. Authorities have also warned of potential disease outbreaks due to poor sanitation and overcrowding in relief shelters.

International assistance has begun to arrive, with neighbouring countries and humanitarian organisations sending emergency supplies, rescue personnel and medical aid. Efforts are being focused on the worst-hit zones, where entire communities have been isolated.
