The 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) has officially opened in Geneva, Switzerland, bringing together representatives from all World Health Organization (WHO) member states to discuss global health priorities and long-term reforms. The annual meeting serves as the WHO’s highest decision-making body, where countries set policies, approve budgets, and shape the direction of international health programmes.
This year’s session began on May 18, 2026, amid growing global concerns about the ability of health systems to respond to future emergencies. Delegates from across the world are focusing on strengthening health financing, improving preparedness, and ensuring more resilient healthcare systems in the face of emerging threats.
A central theme of this year’s assembly is the need to “reshape global health governance” through stronger cooperation between nations. Leaders stressed that countries must work together more closely to address shared challenges such as disease outbreaks, climate-related health risks, and unequal access to healthcare services.
Officials highlighted that global health systems are still under pressure following recent crises, and many countries continue to face funding shortages. As a result, discussions are expected to focus heavily on improving financial stability for health programmes and ensuring more efficient use of resources within international health agencies.
Another key area of discussion is emergency preparedness. Member states are reviewing strategies to improve early warning systems, disease surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms. Strengthening these systems is seen as critical to avoiding large-scale health emergencies in the future.
The assembly is also expected to explore reforms aimed at making global health institutions more effective and adaptable. These include improving coordination between countries, modernising health data systems, and expanding digital health tools to support better healthcare delivery.
The WHA, held annually in Geneva, brings together 194 member states of the WHO. It plays a crucial role in setting global health priorities and ensuring international cooperation on health-related issues. Decisions made during the session guide the work of the WHO and influence health policies worldwide.
