YouTube Shorts gets cleaner, faster

New tools cut clutter and improve viewing control

YouTube is giving its Shorts platform a fresh makeover with a range of new features aimed at making short-video viewing more comfortable and user-friendly. The latest update focuses on reducing distractions, speeding up playback and giving viewers more control over how they interact with content. The company says the changes are based on feedback from millions of users as Shorts completes five years on the platform.

One of the most noticeable additions is Clear Screen mode, which lets users hide all on-screen buttons, captions and icons with a single tap. This creates a full-screen viewing experience, allowing people to enjoy videos without visual clutter. Whether watching travel clips, recipes or creative content, viewers can now focus entirely on the video itself.

Another useful feature is 2x playback speed. By pressing and holding either side of the screen, users can watch Shorts at double speed. This makes it easier to move through content quickly or replay videos without waiting. YouTube has also added a mute button, allowing users to instantly silence videos without adjusting their device’s volume settings.

The platform is also changing the way users shape their recommendations. Instead of relying on the Dislike button, YouTube is encouraging people to use options such as “Not Interested” or “Don’t Recommend This Channel.” According to the company, these tools provide better feedback and help deliver more personalised content over time.

To support healthier viewing habits, YouTube is rolling out a sleep timer for Shorts in select markets. Users can choose a time limit after which Shorts will automatically stop playing. The feature is designed to help people avoid spending longer than intended scrolling through videos, especially during late-night viewing.

The latest improvements come as competition among short-video platforms continues to grow. By introducing a cleaner interface, faster navigation and smarter viewing controls, YouTube hopes to make Shorts more enjoyable for both casual viewers and regular creators.
