Fourteen members of the Kuki community who had been held captive for nearly a month were released in Manipur following negotiations involving community leaders and civil society groups. The release has been welcomed as a positive development amid ongoing efforts to reduce ethnic tensions and restore normalcy in the violence-hit state.
The hostages were reportedly abducted on May 14 from the Naga-majority Nungcham area in Kamjong district. According to reports, they had travelled to the region to collect forest produce when they were intercepted and taken captive by armed individuals linked to local Naga groups. Their disappearance had sparked concern among community organisations and prompted appeals for their safe return.
After 27 days in captivity, the 14 individuals were released and handed over to authorities. Officials said the release was made possible through sustained dialogue and mediation efforts involving tribal leaders, local organisations and representatives from both communities. The freed hostages were subsequently reunited with their families.
Authorities reported that all those released appeared to be in stable condition. Medical examinations were conducted following their return, and arrangements were made to provide necessary assistance and support.
The incident had highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of Manipur, where ethnic tensions between different communities have periodically resulted in clashes, displacement and disruptions to normal life. While the exact circumstances surrounding the abduction remain under investigation, officials have indicated that efforts are underway to establish the facts and identify those responsible.
Community leaders welcomed the release and called for continued dialogue to prevent further incidents. Several organisations urged all sides to work towards peaceful coexistence and avoid actions that could inflame tensions.
The development comes as the state continues to face challenges related to law and order and inter-community relations. Security forces remain deployed in sensitive areas, while the administration is pursuing measures aimed at rebuilding trust and maintaining peace.
