7 dead after ammonia leak at Tamil Nadu factory

More than 50 hospitalised as toxic gas triggers panic in coastal district

A tragic ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has claimed seven lives and affected around 70 people, triggering widespread concern among residents and authorities.

The incident occurred at a seafood processing unit in the industrial belt, where ammonia is used as a refrigerant in cold storage facilities. According to officials, the gas leak spread rapidly through parts of the factory premises, exposing workers and nearby residents to toxic fumes. Several people complained of breathing difficulties, eye irritation and dizziness shortly after the leak was detected.

Emergency response teams rushed to the site and launched evacuation and rescue operations. Ambulances transported affected individuals to nearby hospitals, where many received treatment for respiratory problems and other symptoms linked to ammonia exposure. Health officials said most of those admitted were in stable condition, though a few required intensive medical care.

The deaths have cast a shadow over the local community, with families mourning the loss of loved ones. Residents described scenes of panic as people rushed out of homes and workplaces after noticing the strong smell of gas in the area. Many said they feared for their safety until authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control.

District officials, police personnel and disaster response teams remained at the site to monitor conditions and ensure there was no further threat to public safety. Authorities also initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the leak and assess whether safety protocols had been followed at the facility.

Senior state government representatives expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured that all necessary assistance would be provided. Compensation measures and support for affected families are also being examined.

Industrial safety experts noted that ammonia is widely used in refrigeration systems but can become highly dangerous when released in large quantities. They stressed the importance of regular maintenance, safety audits and emergency preparedness to prevent similar incidents.
