Indian Railways has approved 100 major infrastructure projects worth ₹1.53 lakh crore for the financial year 2025–26, marking a significant push to expand and modernise its network.
The projects will cover over 6,000 kilometres of track, including new railway lines as well as doubling and multitracking of existing routes. These upgrades are aimed at easing congestion on busy corridors and improving the overall efficiency of train operations across the country.
This year’s plan is much bigger compared to previous years. The number of approved projects has increased sharply, and the total investment has more than doubled, showing a stronger focus on improving rail infrastructure.
Officials say the expansion is part of the government’s broader plan to build a faster and more reliable transport network. A key focus is on improving connectivity in areas that are currently underserved, helping more regions get better access to rail services.
Apart from laying new tracks, the projects will also include building bypass lines and flyovers. These additions are expected to reduce delays, improve train speeds, and make journeys smoother for passengers.
The expansion is also important for freight movement. With industries relying heavily on rail transport, increasing capacity will help move goods more efficiently across the country, supporting economic growth.
