Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has found himself at the centre of a political controversy after remarks made during a public rally were interpreted as referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist.” The statement triggered a sharp reaction from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Kharge of using “derogatory” language against the Prime Minister.
Following the backlash, Kharge issued a clarification, stating that he never intended to label PM Modi as a terrorist. He said his comments were misinterpreted and insisted that his reference was to the Prime Minister’s political style, which he described as intimidating in nature.
According to Kharge, his intention was to highlight what he called a pattern of threats and pressure in political discourse, rather than to make a personal allegation against the Prime Minister. He maintained that his words were taken out of context and emphasized that he respects the office of the Prime Minister.
However, the BJP strongly rejected Kharge’s clarification. Party leaders accused him of repeatedly indulging in “frustrated politics” and making irresponsible statements during the election period. The ruling party said such remarks lowered the level of political debate and demanded accountability from the Congress leadership.
The BJP also escalated the matter politically, with leaders calling for an apology and raising the issue with authorities, arguing that the comments violated norms of political conduct. They said the Congress was engaging in personal attacks rather than focusing on issues of governance and development.
The controversy has added to already heightened political tensions between the two major parties ahead of key electoral battles. Both sides have intensified their rhetoric in recent weeks, with repeated exchanges over leadership style, governance record, and campaign messaging.
