White House dinner shooting sparks security fears

Trump moved to safety. Suspect manifesto reportedly spared FBI chief Kash Patel

A shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington has raised fresh concerns over political violence and security at high-profile events in the United States.

The incident took place outside the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner attended by political leaders, journalists and celebrities was being held. President Donald Trump was present when gunfire broke out near a security checkpoint.

Secret Service officers quickly moved Trump and other senior officials to safety, while guests inside the venue were asked to remain in place as security teams responded.

Authorities said the suspect, a 31-year-old man from California, was carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and knives. Investigators believe he was attempting to breach the event perimeter before being stopped by officers.

One law enforcement officer was injured after being struck in a protective vest during the confrontation. Officials said the injuries were not life-threatening, and the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

The case drew wider attention after investigators reportedly recovered a manifesto linked to the accused. According to media reports, the document contained anti-Trump views, anti-Christian remarks and anger toward government institutions.

The writings also allegedly named several public figures, but reports said FBI Director Kash Patel was not included among the intended targets, prompting widespread attention online.

Trump later described the accused as a “pretty sick guy” and praised security personnel for their quick response, saying they prevented a potentially bigger tragedy.

The shooting has also triggered questions over security arrangements for one of Washington’s most visible annual gatherings. The event is attended by senior government officials, media executives and invited guests every year.

Investigators are now reviewing the suspect’s background, travel records, online activity and possible motive. Authorities are also examining whether warning signs were missed before the incident.

The White House Correspondents’ Association later said the dinner would be rescheduled after the security scare.
