UK Health Secretary quits, sparks labour leadership turmoil

Wes Streeting resigns and calls for leadership contest as pressure builds on PM Keir Starmer

The UK government has been thrown into fresh political uncertainty after Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet, openly challenging his leadership.

In his resignation, Streeting said he no longer had confidence in Starmer and warned that the Labour Party risked weakening its position if internal issues continued. He also called for a leadership contest, saying the party needed a reset and a stronger direction ahead of the next general election.

The move has intensified pressure on Starmer, with reports of growing dissatisfaction within Labour ranks following recent electoral setbacks. Some MPs are now openly questioning whether he can lead the party into the next national vote.

Streeting’s exit is being seen as the most significant cabinet resignation since Labour came to power, and it has triggered speculation about possible leadership rivals emerging within the party. Senior figures are reportedly being encouraged by supporters to consider a challenge.

Despite the unrest, Starmer has refused to step down. Downing Street says he continues to have the backing of most of the party and remains focused on governance.

The resignation has exposed widening divisions inside Labour, with disagreements over strategy, messaging and leadership direction now becoming more visible.
