OpenAI has reportedly acquired Weights.gg, a startup specialising in artificial intelligence-powered voice cloning and speech generation. The move is seen as part of OpenAI’s strategy to expand its voice AI capabilities and improve natural speech interaction in its products.
The acquisition, completed earlier in 2026, has not been officially announced by either company. However, reports indicate that OpenAI has taken over Weights.gg’s core technology, intellectual property and team. The startup’s consumer platform, Replay, was shut down earlier this year around the same period.
Weights.gg became known for developing tools that could replicate human voices using short audio clips. Users were able to generate synthetic speech that closely matched real voices, making it popular among creators and developers experimenting with audio AI.
The technology sits within a fast-growing area of artificial intelligence focused on speech synthesis, voice assistants and conversational AI. Such tools are increasingly being used in content production, customer support systems and accessibility services.
For OpenAI, the acquisition is expected to enhance its existing voice capabilities, including real-time speech features and more natural conversational responses. The company has been investing heavily in making AI interactions more human-like and fluid.
However, the rise of voice cloning has also raised concerns about misuse, including identity fraud, deepfake audio and misinformation. This has led to growing calls for stronger regulation and responsible deployment of such technologies.
