Iran strikes US base after attacks near Bandar Abbas

Fresh military escalation raises fears of wider conflict in West Asia

Tensions between Iran and the United States escalated sharply after Iran claimed responsibility for retaliatory strikes targeting a US military base following American attacks near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian authorities said the strikes were carried out in response to recent US military action targeting areas linked to drone operations near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described the attack as a direct response to what it called American aggression against Iranian territory and military infrastructure.

Reports said the US had earlier launched strikes on sites near Bandar Abbas, claiming the targets were connected to drone activities that threatened American troops and commercial shipping routes in the region. US officials reportedly said the operation was intended to protect military personnel and maintain security in one of the world’s busiest oil transit corridors.

Soon after the US action, Iran announced that it had targeted an American airbase in retaliation. While officials did not publicly reveal the exact location of the base, the attack marked a major escalation in the already tense relationship between the two countries.

The exchange of strikes has increased concerns about a broader regional conflict in West Asia. Several neighbouring countries reportedly heightened security measures after missile and drone activity was detected in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, located close to Bandar Abbas, is a critical global shipping route through which a large share of the world’s oil supply passes. Any military confrontation near the waterway often impacts global energy markets and raises fears of disruptions in international trade.
