SC says trauma care is part of right to life

Governments to improve emergency medical services, integrate helplines into the national 112 system

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that access to trauma care is an essential part of the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

In an important judgment, the court said every citizen has the right to timely emergency medical treatment, especially in accident and trauma cases. The bench stressed that delays in treatment often cost lives and directed governments to improve emergency healthcare systems across the country.

The Supreme Court instructed the Centre and state governments to integrate all emergency helpline numbers into the national 112 emergency response system. The move aims to make emergency services easier and faster to access during accidents and medical emergencies.

The court also directed authorities to properly implement the PM Rahat and Good Samaritan schemes. These schemes are meant to encourage people to help road accident victims without fear of legal harassment or unnecessary police questioning.

The judges noted that many accident victims die because they do not receive immediate trauma care or are unable to reach hospitals quickly. The court said emergency medical treatment should not depend on a person’s financial condition or location.

The judgment came while hearing matters related to road safety, emergency response systems, and trauma care facilities in India. The court observed that strengthening trauma care infrastructure is necessary to reduce preventable deaths.

The bench also asked governments to ensure better coordination between hospitals, ambulance services, police, and emergency response teams. It highlighted the need for properly equipped trauma centres, trained medical staff, and faster ambulance networks.

Road accidents continue to claim thousands of lives in India every year, with experts often pointing to delays in treatment as a major reason for fatalities. The court said improving trauma care systems could save many lives.

The Supreme Court’s directions are expected to push authorities to improve emergency medical infrastructure and ensure quicker assistance for accident victims and critically injured patients across the country.
