US–Iran 60-day truce extension, awaits Trump approval

Tentative 60-day ceasefire extension agreed, pending Trump’s decision

The United States and Iran have tentatively agreed to extend their ceasefire by 60 days, opening a possible path back to wider diplomatic talks, according to officials cited in multiple reports. The arrangement is not yet final and now awaits approval from US President Donald Trump and confirmation from Iranian authorities.

The proposed extension would continue the current pause in hostilities and create a defined two-month window for renewed negotiations. These talks are expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security issues, and broader efforts to prevent further escalation.

A key part of the draft deal reportedly involves reducing tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. Measures under discussion include steps to secure maritime traffic and stabilise energy transport through the region, alongside broader political negotiations.

While both sides are said to have broadly agreed on the framework, officials stress that the deal is still provisional. US sources describe it as close to completion but not yet approved at the highest political level. Trump’s decision is expected to determine whether the agreement moves forward.

The talks come after weeks of fragile calm following earlier clashes in the region. Rising pressure over global oil flows and security concerns in the Gulf have pushed both sides toward seeking at least a temporary pause in escalation.
