Counting of votes for Punjab’s civic body elections is underway, and early trends indicate a strong lead for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) across most urban local bodies in the state.
The elections were held across multiple municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats, covering nearly 1,900 wards. Key urban centres involved in the counting include Mohali, Zirakpur, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Bathinda, Pathankot, and other towns across Punjab.
Initial results show AAP ahead in a large number of wards, with the party either winning outright or maintaining comfortable leads in several civic bodies. In Mohali and surrounding urban regions, AAP has shown particularly strong performance, continuing its dominance in key urban constituencies. Similar trends are visible in Ludhiana and Amritsar, where the party is ahead in multiple wards.
The Congress party and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are engaged in a close fight for the second position but remain significantly behind AAP in most regions. Both parties have managed to secure some leads in pockets, especially in localized contests where candidate strength plays a major role.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, has so far failed to make a significant impact in most urban local bodies. Early trends suggest only limited leads or wins for the party in select wards.
Independent candidates have also emerged as strong contenders in several wards, particularly in tightly contested local-level elections where personal influence and local issues have played a decisive role.
According to election officials, voting was conducted smoothly across Punjab, with an estimated voter turnout of around 63–64%, reflecting strong participation in urban civic governance.
These civic body elections are being closely watched as an important political indicator for Punjab’s urban electorate. For AAP, which currently governs the state, the early lead is being seen as a positive signal of public support for its governance and urban development agenda.
