Amit Shah hints at bigger BSF mandate

Home Minister cites evolving security challenges along India's borders

The Centre is considering expanding the role of the Border Security Force (BSF) to better tackle emerging security threats, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday.

Addressing a gathering, Shah said the nature of border security has changed significantly over the years, requiring security forces to adapt to new challenges. He noted that threats today go beyond traditional border protection and include issues such as infiltration, smuggling, terrorism and the misuse of technology by hostile elements.

The Home Minister said the government is examining whether the BSF should be given a wider operational mandate to strengthen its effectiveness in dealing with these evolving threats. However, he did not provide details on what changes are being considered.

Praising the force’s contribution to national security, Shah said BSF personnel have consistently worked under difficult conditions to safeguard India’s borders. He added that the force has played a key role in maintaining security and responding to challenges in border regions.

The BSF is responsible for guarding India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh and is one of the country’s largest border-security organisations. Over the years, its responsibilities have expanded beyond border surveillance to include anti-smuggling operations and support in internal security situations.

Shah’s remarks come as the government continues to focus on strengthening border management and enhancing security capabilities through modern technology and improved coordination among agencies.

Security experts believe any expansion of the BSF’s mandate could further strengthen India’s border security framework, though the government has yet to announce any formal proposal.
