Goa celebrates 39th Statehood Day in Panaji

Goa celebrates statehood anniversary. VP C. P. Radhakrishnan was among dignitaries present

Goa marked its 39th Statehood Day on Saturday with celebrations held in Panaji, bringing together government leaders, officials, and the public for a day of events and cultural programmes.

The Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the main function as the chief guest, alongside state leaders and dignitaries. The event highlighted Goa’s journey since it became a full state in 1987 after earlier being a Union Territory.

The celebration began with official ceremonies, including the flag hoisting and a ceremonial guard of honour. Tributes were also paid to leaders and freedom fighters who played a role in Goa’s history and integration with India.

Cultural performances added colour to the event, with traditional music and dance reflecting Goa’s rich heritage and local identity. Artists and students showcased performances that highlighted the state’s mix of Indian and coastal cultural influences.

Speakers at the event focused on Goa’s development over the years, especially in tourism, infrastructure, and education. They also spoke about the need to protect the state’s environment and maintain balanced, sustainable growth.

Security arrangements were in place across Panaji as large crowds gathered to take part in the celebrations. People from different parts of the state attended, making the event a public gathering as well as an official ceremony.
