AAP wins the Punjab local body polls

Ruling party scores major victories as Congress trails behind

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the clear winner in Punjab’s municipal elections, securing a dominant performance across several civic bodies and reinforcing its political position in the state.

Results declared after the counting of votes showed AAP winning a majority of seats in municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The outcome is being viewed as a significant endorsement of the party’s governance ahead of future electoral contests in Punjab.

The elections were held using ballot papers across multiple urban local bodies. Voter turnout remained steady, with polling taking place under security arrangements across the state.

The biggest setback came for the Indian National Congress, which failed to mount a strong comeback despite hopes of improving its position in urban areas. The party finished a distant second in many civic bodies, raising fresh questions about its organisational strength in Punjab.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also struggled to make major gains, with both parties securing limited success compared to AAP’s performance.

AAP leaders welcomed the results, describing them as a vote of confidence in the government’s policies and development initiatives. Party workers celebrated victories in several towns and cities as results were announced.

Political observers said the results indicate that AAP continues to enjoy strong support among urban voters. The party’s victories across several municipalities suggest that its appeal remains intact four years after coming to power in the state.

For Congress, the outcome represents another electoral disappointment in a state where it was once the dominant political force.
