Kerala gears for monsoon as rainfall picks up

IMD forecasts onset over Kerala on June 4, bringing widespread rain to the state

The southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala on June 4, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The arrival of the monsoon marks the beginning of India’s four-month rainy season, which is crucial for agriculture, water resources and the overall economy.

The weather department said conditions have become favourable for the monsoon’s advance into Kerala after a brief pause in its progress. Widespread rainfall, strong winds and increased cloud cover have been reported across several parts of the state, indicating the monsoon’s arrival.

Meteorologists noted that rainfall activity is expected to intensify over Kerala and neighbouring regions in the coming days. Heavy rain has already been recorded in some districts, prompting authorities to remain alert for possible waterlogging and localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

The monsoon had reached parts of the Indian mainland earlier than usual this year, but its further advance slowed temporarily due to changing weather patterns. With conditions now turning favourable again, the IMD expects the rain-bearing system to continue moving across more parts of the country.

The onset of the southwest monsoon is closely watched because it provides nearly 70 per cent of India’s annual rainfall. A normal monsoon is vital for crop sowing, reservoir levels and rural incomes, especially in states heavily dependent on rain-fed agriculture.

Farmers in Kerala and other southern states have welcomed the forecast, as timely rainfall supports the sowing of key crops. The monsoon is also expected to bring relief from the hot and humid conditions experienced in recent weeks.

The IMD has advised residents, fishermen and local authorities to follow weather updates and take necessary precautions as rainfall activity increases. Rough sea conditions and strong winds are likely along parts of the Kerala coast during the next few days.
