Environmentalist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has extended support to the Citizens’ Justice Platform (CJP), which he jokingly referred to as the “Cockroach Janta Party”, and said he will join its June 6 protest if the government fails to respond to students’ demands and the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan does not step down.
His comments come amid growing protests by students and job aspirants over alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment processes. Wangchuk urged the Centre to listen to young people and address their concerns seriously.
Speaking at a public event, Wangchuk called himself an “honorary cockroach”, saying the term reflects how critics have tried to dismiss those raising questions about education, governance and accountability. He added that such criticism would not stop him from standing with students demanding fairness and transparency.
Wangchuk said lakhs of students spend years preparing for competitive examinations and deserve a system they can trust. He stressed that the issue goes beyond jobs and exams and is linked to public confidence in institutions.
He urged authorities to engage directly with students and take corrective measures where needed. Ignoring their concerns, he said, could deepen frustration among young people and further erode trust in the system.
The June 6 protest is expected to bring together students, activists and civil society groups seeking accountability and reforms. Organisers have demanded action against those responsible for alleged irregularities and stronger safeguards for students and job seekers.
Wangchuk said his support for the movement stems from concern for the future of India’s youth. He maintained that the objective is not political confrontation but ensuring that students are heard and treated fairly.
As the protest date nears, attention is focused on the government’s response and whether any concrete steps are announced to address the concerns raised by students and youth groups.
