Alcohol risks higher than thought

Experts warn moderate alcohol consumption may increase risks for over 20 conditions

New research has highlighted the growing health risks associated with alcohol consumption, linking it to more than 20 medical conditions and challenging long-held beliefs about the benefits of moderate drinking.

According to health experts, alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of several serious diseases, including various types of cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular disorders and mental health conditions. The findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that even low or moderate levels of alcohol consumption may have negative effects on overall health.

For many years, moderate drinking was often believed to provide certain health benefits, particularly for heart health. However, recent studies have questioned this assumption. Researchers say earlier conclusions may have overlooked other lifestyle factors that contributed to better health outcomes among moderate drinkers. As a result, experts now caution against viewing alcohol as a tool for improving health or extending lifespan.

Medical professionals note that alcohol can affect nearly every organ in the body. Regular consumption has been linked to an increased risk of breast, liver and colorectal cancers, as well as high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Excessive drinking can also damage the liver, leading to conditions such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis and cirrhosis.

In addition to physical health concerns, alcohol use can impact mental well-being. Studies have shown links between alcohol consumption and anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances and cognitive decline. Experts warn that the cumulative effects of alcohol may become more significant over time, even when consumption appears moderate.

Health specialists emphasize that there is no completely risk-free level of alcohol consumption. While occasional drinking may carry lower risks than heavy drinking, reducing alcohol intake can help improve overall health and lower the likelihood of developing chronic diseases.

Public health authorities continue to encourage awareness about the potential harms of alcohol and recommend healthier lifestyle choices, including balanced nutrition, regular exercise and adequate sleep.
