Shreyas Iyer takes charge of India’s T20 team

Tilak Varma named vice-captain as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns maiden India call-up

India has appointed Shreyas Iyer as its new T20 International captain, marking a significant leadership change ahead of upcoming series against Ireland and England. The decision comes as selectors begin preparations for the next phase of India’s T20 journey.

Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav, who has been left out of the squad despite leading India in recent T20 assignments. The move signals a shift in strategy, with selectors opting for a fresh leadership group to guide the team in the coming years.

The middle-order batter returns to a prominent role after impressing with his performances and captaincy in domestic and franchise cricket. The selection committee believes Iyer’s experience and leadership qualities make him the right choice to lead the side during a period of transition.

Another major highlight of the squad announcement is the inclusion of teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old earned his maiden senior India call-up following an impressive IPL season that drew attention across the cricketing world.

Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain, reinforcing the selectors’ focus on building a younger leadership core around Iyer. The squad also retains several players from India’s recent successful T20 campaigns, ensuring a balance of youth and experience.

India will begin the new era with a two-match T20I series against Ireland before taking on England in a five-match series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced the squad for the upcoming Asian Games.
