US President Donald Trump has asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch a military strike against Iran, saying diplomatic efforts are making headway and an agreement could be close.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States and Iran were “very close” to reaching a deal that could help ease tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear programme. He warned that any military action now could derail the progress made through negotiations.
Trump said he had conveyed this message directly to Netanyahu, urging restraint while talks continue. According to the US President, discussions with Iran have been constructive, and there is still a real opportunity to resolve differences through diplomacy rather than conflict.
His remarks come at a time of heightened concern over Iran’s nuclear activities. Israel has consistently viewed Iran’s nuclear ambitions as a serious threat to its security and has repeatedly signalled that it could take military action if diplomatic efforts fail to produce results.
Despite the challenges involved in the negotiations, Trump struck an optimistic tone. He said recent talks had been encouraging and suggested that a breakthrough could be achieved in the near future.
The President also stressed the importance of avoiding a wider conflict in the Middle East. He argued that a negotiated settlement would be far more beneficial for regional stability than military confrontation and urged all sides to allow diplomacy to run its course.
Neither the White House nor Israeli officials released details of Trump’s conversation with Netanyahu. Iran has also not publicly responded to the President’s comments.
