PM Modi begins historic Slovakia visit

First ever visit by an Indian PM since 1993. Deeper defence and trade ties sought

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Slovakia on Sunday, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Central European nation since the establishment of the Slovak Republic in 1993.

PM Modi landed in the Slovak capital, Bratislava, as part of a two-nation tour of Europe. Upon arrival, he received a ceremonial welcome that included the traditional Slovak offering of bread and salt, a symbol of hospitality and friendship. Members of the Indian diaspora and local officials also gathered to welcome the Prime Minister.

Describing the visit as a historic milestone in bilateral relations, Modi said India and Slovakia share warm and friendly ties and that the trip would help open new avenues for cooperation. He expressed confidence that discussions with Slovak leaders would strengthen engagement across key sectors.

During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, technology, innovation, clean energy and education.

India and Slovakia have witnessed growing economic engagement in recent years, with both countries seeking to deepen collaboration in advanced manufacturing, automotive technologies and defence production. Officials from both sides are expected to explore opportunities for increased business partnerships and investment flows.

The visit comes at a time when India is strengthening its outreach to European countries amid evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics. Analysts believe closer ties with Slovakia could help India enhance its presence in Central Europe while also supporting broader engagement with the European Union.

He is also expected to interact with members of the Indian community in Slovakia and discuss ways to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges. The visit highlights India’s efforts to diversify international partnerships and strengthen strategic relationships across Europe.
