Negotiations for the proposed India-US trade agreement have reached the final stage, according to Sergio Gor, a senior aide to US President Donald Trump. He said both countries are close to finalising the long-awaited deal, which is expected to further strengthen economic ties.
Speaking during his visit to India, Gor said officials from both sides have made significant progress and are working on the remaining issues before the agreement is concluded. While he did not specify a timeline, he expressed confidence that the deal would be finalised soon.
Gor also highlighted the strong personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump, saying the US President considers Modi a close friend. Sharing an anecdote, he recalled that Trump once wanted to call PM Modi during an event despite it being 6 am in India. When Gor pointed out the time difference, Trump replied, “He’ll be awake. He’s like me. He doesn’t sleep.” Gor said the incident reflected the close understanding between the two leaders.
He added that India and the United States are natural partners with shared interests in trade, technology, investment and strategic cooperation. According to him, the proposed trade agreement will help expand business opportunities and strengthen commercial ties between the two countries.
The trade pact has been under negotiation for several months, with both sides working to resolve issues related to tariffs, market access and other trade matters. Officials from India and the US have repeatedly expressed optimism about reaching a balanced agreement.
