France produced another commanding performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Sweden 3-0 to secure a place in the Round of 16. Leading from the front was captain Kylian Mbappé, whose two goals ensured Les Bleus progressed in style and strengthened their status as one of the tournament favourites.
The French side dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and creating a series of chances. Sweden struggled to cope with France’s pace and attacking movement, with the woodwork denying the former world champions on more than one occasion before the breakthrough finally arrived.
Mbappé opened the scoring just before half-time, calmly finishing a flowing move to give France a deserved lead. The goal lifted the team’s confidence, and they returned after the break with even greater intensity.
France doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute through Bradley Barcola, who finished neatly after a well-worked attacking move. Midfielder Michael Olise continued his impressive tournament by providing the assist and constantly troubling the Swedish defence with his creativity and vision.
Mbappé added his second goal midway through the second half, once again converting a pass from Olise to put the result beyond doubt. The brace took the French captain’s tally to six goals in the tournament, placing him among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot.
Sweden found it difficult to create meaningful opportunities despite fielding a talented attack. France’s disciplined defence and midfield control ensured goalkeeper Mike Maignan had a relatively quiet evening as the team comfortably saw out the match.
The convincing victory highlighted France’s balance across the pitch, with experienced leaders combining effectively with emerging young talent. Coach Didier Deschamps will also be pleased with the growing understanding between Mbappé, Barcola and Olise, whose partnership has become one of France’s biggest strengths in the tournament.
France will now take on Paraguay in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for another World Cup title.
