Apple is reportedly working on a redesigned Apple Pencil that could feature a replaceable battery, addressing one of the most common concerns among users of the popular iPad accessory. The new stylus is expected to debut alongside Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro, although the company has not officially confirmed the development.
Current Apple Pencil models come with sealed batteries, making them difficult to repair or replace once battery performance starts to decline. If the reports are accurate, the upcoming version will allow users to swap out the battery, extending the accessory’s lifespan without having to purchase a new stylus.
The change is expected to improve the ownership experience for users who rely on the Apple Pencil for everyday tasks such as note-taking, sketching, graphic design and digital illustration. Students, artists and professionals who use the stylus for long hours could particularly benefit from a battery that can be replaced after years of use.
The redesigned Apple Pencil is also seen as part of Apple’s growing focus on sustainability and product repairability. A replaceable battery would reduce electronic waste by allowing users to keep the same accessory for longer, instead of discarding it when the battery wears out. It could also lower maintenance costs for customers.
Despite the reported hardware change, Apple is expected to retain the Pencil’s core features, including pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition and low-latency writing performance. These features have made the Apple Pencil one of the most widely used styluses in the premium tablet segment.
Reports suggest the updated stylus could launch alongside the next-generation iPad Pro, which is also expected to receive hardware upgrades and improved performance.
