A routine Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency after an alleged attack inside the cockpit sent the aircraft into a rapid descent. Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured, but his actions, along with the quick response of passengers and crew, helped bring the flight safely to the ground.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073, carrying around 174 passengers, was more than two hours into its journey when the incident unfolded. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was flying over Saudi Arabia when it suddenly lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. The aircraft sent emergency signals before being diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
According to Israeli officials, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot, who allegedly tried to take control of the aircraft. The exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation. The incident initially raised concerns about a possible hijacking, but Israeli officials later said it was not a hijacking.
Machchhar was badly injured during the confrontation. Despite suffering serious wounds and losing a large amount of blood, he managed to open the cockpit door. That crucial action allowed passengers and crew members to reach the cockpit and help restrain the suspected attacker.
One of the passengers who rushed towards the cockpit was Israeli dentist Musaev Shota. He helped overpower the attacker before turning his attention to the injured pilot. Shota was the only medical professional among the passengers and immediately began treating Machchhar.
The dentist later described the pilot as being in serious condition, with heavy bleeding from his head and hands. He said Machchhar remained conscious and continued communicating with them even while lying injured on the aircraft floor.
Shota’s medical assistance was crucial during the flight. He worked to control the bleeding and kept the pilot stable until the aircraft landed. He later said Machchhar’s condition deteriorated somewhat shortly before landing but that the pilot survived the emergency.
The Indian pilot was eventually taken to a hospital in Tabuk. India’s Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was receiving medical treatment and was reported to be stable. Indian diplomatic officials were also in contact with his family and Saudi authorities and said they would continue to follow his recovery.
The crisis did not end with the cockpit struggle. With the aircraft having lost a significant amount of altitude, those on board had to work quickly to stabilise the situation and prepare for an emergency landing.
Two other pilots travelling as passengers were also able to assist, according to reports. Their presence, together with the response of the passengers and cabin crew, helped the aircraft reach Tabuk safely. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the pilot’s actions helped save the lives of the 174 people aboard the flight.
The incident also drew attention in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar for his courage and said his actions helped avert a major tragedy. Modi described the captain as a hero and wished him a speedy recovery.
Machchhar has previous experience with Indian airline SpiceJet and has been flying Boeing 737 aircraft for more than a decade. His background in commercial aviation has now become part of the public focus following the extraordinary circumstances faced during the flight.
The emergency also highlighted how quickly an aviation crisis can develop. The aircraft went from normal flight conditions to a steep descent within seconds, leaving little time for those on board to understand what was happening.
Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft dropping from around 33,000 feet to approximately 19,000 feet in less than a minute. Emergency alerts were transmitted as the situation unfolded. The aircraft then changed course towards Saudi Arabia instead of continuing towards Tel Aviv.
The sudden diversion initially created uncertainty about what had happened. Israeli authorities were monitoring the situation as the aircraft headed towards Tabuk. Once the plane landed safely, details began to emerge about the confrontation inside the cockpit.
Passengers were later taken to Israel on another flight. Several people received medical attention for minor injuries, while the wider group was reported safe.
The incident is now being investigated by authorities, who will examine what happened inside the cockpit, how the confrontation developed and how the aircraft was controlled during its rapid descent. The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the actions of those involved will also be examined.
Flydubai has been cooperating with the authorities investigating the incident.
For the passengers on Flight FZ1073, the journey could have ended very differently. Instead, the aircraft reached the ground safely after a chain of quick decisions by the injured captain, passengers, crew members and other pilots on board.
Machchhar’s ability to open the cockpit door despite his injuries became a crucial moment in the emergency. The actions of passenger Musaev Shota then added another layer of support, as the dentist used his medical skills to treat the badly wounded pilot.
The full circumstances of the Flydubai flight emergency will become clearer as the investigation continues. But the events aboard Flight FZ1073 have already placed Captain Smit Machchhar and the passengers who stepped forward at the centre of an extraordinary aviation emergency.
