PhonePe has partnered with OpenAI to bring the AI chatbot ChatGPT directly into its UPI payments app, making it easier for users to get guidance before making payments.
The integration allows users to ask ChatGPT questions inside the app—whether comparing products, checking prices, exploring service options, or planning expenses. While it’s not the full ChatGPT experience, the feature focuses on providing helpful advice relevant to payments and shopping. Users can now make more informed decisions without leaving the app.
Rahul Chari, PhonePe’s Founder and CTO, said, “At PhonePe, we have spent years building the foundational layers for digital services at population-scale. This strategic alliance demonstrates that collaborations between innovative companies can help expand the reach of cutting-edge technology to the broader population. We are excited to partner with OpenAI to begin this journey.”
Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, added, “Our collaboration with PhonePe is a significant milestone in our mission to make AI more accessible to people throughout India. PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country’s fabric and its user base make them the ideal partner. This partnership will demonstrate the immense value of consumer AI across India, helping millions of users enhance their daily lives.”
OpenAI has been expanding in India, opening its first office and partnering with fintech companies to make AI accessible to everyday users. The collaboration with PhonePe aligns with this strategy, helping users get contextual advice right inside a payments app.
For PhonePe, the move is aimed at improving user experience, increasing engagement, and differentiating itself in a competitive fintech market. Users can now get suggestions before hitting the “Pay” button, making digital payments smarter and more convenient.
The rollout will be gradual, and its success depends on how well the AI handles real-world UPI transactions while keeping user data private. No financial details of the partnership have been disclosed.
