Navi Mumbai is set to get its first international airport this Christmas. The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will begin operations on December 25, 2025, providing a modern alternative to the busy Mumbai airport.
The airport will start with 23 daily departures. IndiGo will operate key domestic routes connecting cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Goa, Jaipur, and Kochi. The airline plans to scale up to over 100 daily flights by March 2026 and 140 flights by November 2026, including international services.
Akasa Air will operate the first flight, flying from Delhi to Navi Mumbai, followed by routes to Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad. Ticket prices for initial flights are expected to start at ₹6,000. The airport will operate 12 hours a day, from 8 AM to 8 PM, during its first phase.
The airport’s terminal draws inspiration from the lotus flower, featuring 12 petal-shaped columns that bring in natural light. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal combines modern architecture with passenger-friendly design.
NMIA is also a smart and green airport, with facial-recognition boarding, biometric gates, automated baggage handling, and solar power. It will support electric vehicles and include water recycling systems.
Currently, the airport has one runway and terminal, capable of handling 20 million passengers annually. Long-term plans include four runways and three terminals, expanding capacity to 90 million passengers per year.
The new airport will help reduce congestion at Mumbai’s main airport, offer a faster, tech-driven travel experience, and improve connectivity across India and abroad.
