The Congress party has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of allowing unfair changes to voter lists through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Congress leaders say this exercise could remove genuine voters, especially opposition supporters, and add names that should not be there. They call this a threat to fair elections.
In its first big meeting after losing the Bihar elections badly, Congress said the ECI’s actions look biased. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said the Commission appears to be acting under pressure and is not protecting democratic values. Congress leaders also claim that officials doing the voter checks are being rushed, which could lead to many mistakes.
According to AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, the party has raised these concerns several times, but the ECI has not responded properly. He said that the Commission’s silence would mean it is indirectly supporting wrongdoing.
To highlight the issue, Congress plans to hold a large protest rally at Ramleela Maidan in the first week of December. The party says it will explain to people how the SIR process is being “misused.”
The Election Commission has denied all accusations. It says the SIR is being done fairly and transparently. The ECI also stated that a video shared by Congress claiming “vote theft” was AI-generated and misleading.
